We provide 1800 children with one meal a day as part of our nutritional programme. A total of 100 families receive monthly food parcels. Our model is aimed at mentoring families into sustainable livelihoods.
The Stellenbosch Community Development Programme (SCDP) is a non-profit, donor-funded, public-benefit organisation. It is based in Kayamandi, a peri-urban area where the majority of residents (30 000) come in search of work. Most live in informal settlements and in dire poverty. This, coupled with a high incidence of illiteracy and HIV/Aids, makes Kayamandi a community in desperate need of assistance.
The SCDP provides the malnourished school children of Kayamandi something to eat on a daily basis. Our scientific surveys have shown a dramatic improvement in malnourishment since we started our programme.
We specialize in running nutritional programmes at two primary schools namely Ikaya Primary School and Kayamandi Primary School, as well as at 24 crèches and for 100 mothers in the Kayamandi community.
Our main motivation lies in our compassion for children who are hungry and our ability to reach out and help. It has been proven that children who have something to eat have improved concentration, perform better academically and have a lower level of aggression.
Our monthly food parcel is a supportive intervention for six months while mothers/fathers develop the necessary skills to start community-based business as well as to get jobs in the formal sector. We run vegetable gardens, a craft club, micro-business courses and health care and life-skills programmes.
Our motto is “Not Afraid to Love“. Your being interested is part of this aim – thank you for making the effort to find out more.
