For families

Food Parcels

100 families receive monthly food parcels of mielie meal, oats, rice, beans, samp, fortified cereal, tinned vegetables, milk, bread and vegetables. These families live in dire poverty and this supplementary food aid is a vital intervention to assisting them in improving their lives. The food parcel programme is a six month model and mentors parents in developing the necessary skills to start community-based businesses or find jobs in the formal sector.

The food parcels cost SA R220 per parcel per month.

Would you like to provide financial assistance? You could do it in the form of donations in whatever size which is convenient or affordable to you.

Our target is to offer the food-parcel programme to 120 families per month.

Our health-care workers visit all “our families” to monitor the use of the food parcel and the improvements in the general health conditions because of increased nutrition.

Vegetable Gardens

We run two vegetable gardens, one at our SCDP centre located at the Ikaya Primary School,  and one at the Kayamandi Primary School, which provide fresh vegetables to those receiving food parcels. In return, mothers/fathers who receive food parcels, maintain the vegetable gardens and are mentored in establishing a garden at their home, or on communal ground in the community.

Each garden consists either of worn-out car tyres that are filled with top soil, compost and garden or paper waste, or a regular garden.

Emily Mbambalala, a paid staff member, is the main gardener and leader of the group. She keeps the roster and ensures a pattern of planting and of vegetable harvests.

We grow a variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, mielies, cabbages, spinach, beetroot, broccoli and spring onions.

Often, the vegetables grown in this manner are the only vegetables that the family and our children ever see on their plates at mealtime.
